The most common are a lack of muscle
coordination when performing voluntary movements (ataxia); stiff or tight
muscles and exaggerated reflexes (spasticity); walking with one foot or
leg dragging; walking on the toes, a crouched gait, or a scissored
gait; and muscle tone that is either too stiff or too
floppy. Additionally, up to half of all children with CP
experience one form of seizure or another.
Treatment may include physical and
occupational therapy, speech therapy, and drugs to control seizures, relax
muscle spasms, and alleviate pain. Many undergo surgery to correct
anatomical abnormalities or release tight muscles.
While there is no cure for cerebral
palsy, there are many treatments and therapies that aim to minimize the
delays cause by cerebral palsy and allow people to live more productive lives.
One of the therapies that is rapidly gaining popularity and significance is
hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves the quality of life of the patient in many areas when standard medicine is not working. Many conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy, head injuries, and chronic fatigue have responded favorably to HBOT.
The goals of hyperbaric therapy for
cerebral palsy are to improve motor function and allow the brain to heal parts
that have been damaged by hypoxia. It has been theorized that the neurological damage that
leads to cerebral palsy does not result in complete cell death in the injured
area. Some cells receive enough oxygen to stay alive, but not enough to
function.
Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy
exponentially increases the amount of available free oxygen in the blood.
Increased oxygen to the brain may "jump start" oxygen-starved cells
and help to return motor control to the patient.
Benefits of HBOT in
Neurological repair & regeneration:
Reduces the effects of low oxygen
Promotes the creation of new brain cells
Enhances Stem cell growth
Increases brain tissue healing
Creates new connective tissues
Benefit of HBOT in functional
improvement:
Advances cognitive function
Improves gross & fine motor skills
Improves memory and concentrations
Enhances speech & language
Alleviates spasticity
Lessens frequency of seizures
Stimulates better eye contact
Improves balance & walking.
Improves balance & walking.
The earlier one seeks hyperbaric oxygen
therapy for cerebral palsy, the better is the outcome. However, patients at all
stages of life and with varying severities of cerebral palsy noticed
improvements in many areas, including global motor coordination, memory, visual
perception, and a decrease in spasticity.
Children undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy must be accompanied by parent or other responsible adults.
Children undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy must be accompanied by parent or other responsible adults.
The usual course of oxygen therapy is once daily, five days a week for eight weeks. Our Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Chambers are safe, pleasant, made to accommodate one parent and one child for child comfort.
